I am saddened by he news of Madame Claude Pompidou’s passing. I immediately think back to her visit to my home in New York last February, where she once again impressed me with her grace and intelligence. She visited with Mrs. Bernadette Chirac. The two First Ladies of France were in town for the gala reception for Madame Pompidou’s foundation held at the Neue Gallery and hosted by Ronald Lauder and Veronica Hearst . That night she stood tall for twenty minutes and read her gracious remarks in perfect English. I also appreciated her sweet and kind words at Arman’s Memorial last November at the Centre Pompidou when she said, “You took such good care of him. He was so lucky to have you.” To which I responded, “I was so lucky to have him!” I was so grateful for her friendship and support. It was truly an honor to have known Mrs. Pompidou and I will miss her dearly.
